Marienplatz - Munich, Germany

Marienplatz square is the heart of Munich. In the centre rises the Mariensaule, a column erected by the Prince-Elector Maximillian in 1638. The north side is occupied by the neo-Gothic Neus Rathaus, whose carillon (Glockenspiel) installed in the tower's oriel window, is a favourite tourist attraction. When the mechanism is activated (at 11am, noon and 5pm), brightly coloured figures in enamelled copper emerge and enact the Dance of the Coopers and the Tournament which accompanied royal weddings.
